FAQ

Questions and answers

Short answers, taken from how Nisabify works and from its Privacy Policy, Terms and Support pages, which have the full detail.

Rulings and figures

Which schools of fiqh does Nisabify support?

Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī and Ḥanbalī. You choose one when you set up, and you can change it in Settings. Other schools are not supported.

What does “Sourced, not scholar-reviewed” mean?

Every position Nisabify applies is recorded with its stated basis and the recognised alternative. No named scholar has reviewed that set of rulings yet. The label, and the version of the ruling set, appear next to every figure so the caveat always travels with the number.

Is a Nisabify figure a fatwa?

No. It is an estimate worked out from what you enter and the settings you choose. Nisabify does not decide whether you owe zakat, how much, or when. Consult a qualified scholar about your own situation.

Does Nisabify apply every position of my school exactly?

Not yet. In particular, the Ḥanbalī setting currently deducts debts the same way as the Ḥanafī one. On the website, the Methodology page shows what Nisabify does not yet do for each position. Check the working against your own school before you rely on a figure.

Why does Nisabify ask gold or silver separately?

The nisab can be set by the value of 85 g of gold or 595 g of silver, and the two are about ten times apart. That can decide whether you owe anything at all, so Nisabify asks it as its own question, with your school’s usual position selected to start. Which to use is a question for a scholar; Nisabify does not decide it for you.

How does Nisabify count my zakat year?

A lunar year ends on its Hijri anniversary, counted on the Umm al-Qurā calendar, which Nisabify keeps as a fixed table so a device update cannot move your due date. You can choose a solar year of 365 days instead, at 2.58% rather than 2.5%.

Where do the gold and silver prices come from?

You enter them. Nisabify does not fetch live prices. It starts with default prices, dated in Settings; update them there before you rely on a figure.

Your account and data

Why is Nisabify for adults 18 and over only?

Nisabify is a personal-finance tool for adults. The first setup step asks your date of birth once, to check you are 18 or over. Nisabify does not store the date; it keeps only a record that you confirmed it. If you are under 18, you cannot continue, and you can sign out or delete your account from that screen.

How do I sign in?

With an email address and a password, on the website and in the apps. On iPhone and iPad you can also use Sign in with Apple. Nisabify always needs an account, because it keeps your record for you.

What does Nisabify store about me?

Your sign-in details and email address; what you enter (accounts, balances, assets, debts and gifts); your settings and zakat years; your school of fiqh, stored only after you agree; each calculation Nisabify saves; and the record that you confirmed you are 18 or over. It is kept on Nisabify’s servers in the United States.

It is not end-to-end encrypted: Nisabify can read what you store, including the names of the recipients you record gifts to. Nisabify does not store your date of birth, and does not collect your location, contacts, bank logins or advertising identifiers. The Privacy Policy has the full list.

Is my data sold or used for ads?

No. Nisabify has no ads, analytics or tracking, and does not sell your personal information or share it for advertising.

How do I delete my account?

While signed in, go to Settings → Your account → Delete account, on the website or in either app. Deletion cannot be undone. If you cannot sign in, email info@mizanfintech.app with the subject “Delete my account”. Step by step: Delete your account.

Can I take my records with me?

Yes. Export CSV in Records saves your giving record, in the apps and on the website. On the website you can also print a summary.

Money and giving

Does Nisabify handle my money?

No. Nisabify does not hold, receive, process or transfer money. Give opens the charity’s own website; the charity takes the payment and issues your receipt. Recording a gift in Nisabify only updates your own record.

Does giving to a listed charity count as zakat?

Nisabify does not say. The charities it lists are US organizations whose tax-exempt status was checked against IRS records on the date shown. That confirms tax-exempt status and nothing more; it is not an endorsement, and whether a gift discharges your zakat is a question for a scholar.

Can I connect my bank account?

Not a real one yet. Nisabify connects bank, card, loan, investment and retirement accounts through Plaid, and for now that reaches only Plaid’s test institutions, so you enter your balances yourself. If you try Connect accounts now, Nisabify tells you it is Plaid’s test mode before Plaid’s page opens, and what connects is Plaid’s sample bank. Nothing from it is added to your wealth.

Once real accounts open, you sign in on a page run by Plaid and Nisabify reads your balances, the holdings in your investment accounts, and your debts. The connection includes permission for your transactions, which Nisabify does not read yet. It is read-only: Nisabify never moves money, and you can disconnect at any time.

Can I use Nisabify for my taxes?

Nisabify’s giving record is a record of what you told it you gave, for you and your tax preparer. It is not a receipt and not tax advice. Keep the receipt each charity sends you: that is what supports a deduction.

Will Nisabify remind me when zakat is due?

Nisabify shows how long is left in your zakat year. It does not send notifications yet.

Apps and pricing

Is there an iPhone or Android app?

Both are in beta testing and not yet in the App Store or on Google Play. The website works today in an up-to-date browser on a computer or a phone.

Is Nisabify free?

Working out your zakat is free. Two paid plans are coming soon: Plus at $69 a year (or $7.99 a month) and Family at $129 a year (or $14.99 a month). Their features are planned and not built yet, apart from connecting accounts, which is in Plaid’s test mode (see Can I connect my bank account?), and nothing is charged now. Join a waitlist for the founding price. See Pricing.

Can I use Nisabify outside the United States?

Nisabify is built for people in the United States: amounts are in US dollars and the listed charities are US organizations.

How do I get help?

Email info@mizanfintech.app, and say whether you use the website, the iPhone and iPad app or the Android app. Never send a password, bank login or account number. More on the Support page.
